    At the Heart of Virtue Growth: 'Self-of-virtue' and 'Virtue identity'

    Within a realist Aristotelian paradigm, this paper explores the concepts of ‘self-of-virtue’ and ‘virtue identity’, its correspondent self-concept. Distinguishing the ‘fundamental disposition’ to virtue growth, which defi nes a self-of-virtue, from the particular dispositions of virtues, we conceptualize virtue growth as an ‘integrative’ and ‘open free systemic’ reality based on phronesis-guided action, and we describe the ‘unifi ed moral self of rationally grounded emotions’. We address the radical difference between virtue identity and moral identity, and we propose a processual model for self-of-virtue development, unfolding its pedagogical aspects and suggesting that refocussing on the development of self-of-virtue would help to avoid atomized virtue education

    Enhancing efficiency of enzymatic-assisted extraction method for evaluating bioactive compound analysis in mulberry: an optimization approach

    The present investigation endeavors to optimize a method based on enzyme-assisted extraction for the efficient retrieval of bioactive compounds from mulberry, leveraging its notable health-promoting properties. A combined approach of Plackett-Burman design followed by Box-Behnken design was employed for determining the crucial extraction parameters and subsequently, refining the process. Optimal conditions consisted of heating 0.15 g of mulberry at 40 degrees C, using 15 mL of 70% EtOH as a solvent at pH 4, 38.46 enzyme units per g of sample, and shaking at 200 rpm. The optimum extraction time study revealed that 5 min of extraction was sufficient to reach the maximum concentration of the bioactive compound. The repeatability and intermediate precision assessment exhibited a coefficient of variation below 5%. Among the diverse mulberry varieties scrutinized, Morus nigra showed the highest anthocyanin content (27.90 +/- 2.14 mg/100 g), while Morus rubra showed the highest concentration of phenolic compounds (121.10 +/- 19.56 mg/100 g).     Prevalencia de hipotensión ortostática en ancianos hipertensos tratados en atención primaria

    ObjetivoConocer la prevalencia de hipotensión ortostática (HO) y los factores asociados en ancianos hipertensos tratados en atención primaria (AP).DiseñoEstudio descriptivo, transversal.EmplazamientoCentro de Salud La Marina (centro urbano en Santander).PacientesUna muestra aleatoria de 295 pacientes de 65 o más años atendidos regularmente por presentar hipertensión arterial (HTA).Mediciones y resultados principalesSe han obtenido cifras de presión arterial (PA) en sedestación y en bipedestación. La definición de HO utilizada ha sido: disminución de 20 mmHg o más en la PA sistólica (PAS) o de 10 mmHg o más en la PA diastólica (PAD), tras 1 o 5 minutos de bipedestación. También se han recogido datos sobre enfermedades asociadas, síntomas en bipedestación, medicación utilizada, hábitos de los pacientes y resultados de otras exploraciones clínicas. La prevalencia global encontrada de HO fue del 14,6%. La prevalencia de HO sistólica tras un minuto (HO-S1) y tras 5 minutos (HO-S5) de bipedestación ha sido del 5,8% en ambas, y la de HO diastólica del 5,1% tras un minuto (HO-D1) y del 4,1% tras 5 minutos (HO-D5) de bipedestación. En el análisis de regresión logística se encontró una asociación entre la existencia de HO global y la mayor elevación de la PA sistólica inicial, la presencia de síntomas de intolerancia ortostática (aunque sólo un 25,6% de los pacientes con HO presentaba síntomas) y el hábito tabáquico. Asimismo, se encontró una asociación con el uso de bloqueadores beta y antagonistas del calcio (diferentes de las dihidropiridinas) y la existencia de HO al minuto de bipedestación, y entre el consumo de tabaco y la HO a los 5 minutos de bipedestación.ConclusionesLa prevalencia detectada es alta y justifica la búsqueda sistemática de HO en los pacientes ancianos que son tratados de HTA en AP. La existencia de síntomas con el ortostatismo se relaciona con una mayor prevalencia de HO, pero sólo los presentó uno de cada 4 pacientes con HO. El consumo de tabaco podría estar relacionado con la presencia de HO, así como el uso de bloqueadores beta y antagonistas del calcio (diferentes de las dihidropiridinas).ObjectiveTo find the prevalence of orthostatic hypotension (OH) and associated factors in elderly hypertensive patients in a primary care setting.DesignDescriptive cross-sectional study.SettingLa Marina Health Centre (an urban centre in Santander).PatientsA random sample of 295 patients aged 65 years or older regularly assisted from hypertension.Measurements and main resultsMeasurements of sitting and standing blood pressure were obtained. Orthostatic hypotension was defined as 20 mmHg or greater decrease in systolic or 10 mmHg or greater decrease in diastolic blood pressure after 1-minute or 5-minute standing. Associated diseases, symptoms upon standing, medication use, habits and other clinical assessments were also recorded. The prevalence of OH was 14.6%. The prevalence of systolic OH after 1-minute (OH-S1) and after 5-minute (OH-S5) standing was 5.8% in both, and the diastolic OH was 5.1% after 1-minute (OH-D1) and 4.1% after 5-minute (OH-D5) standing. By logistic regression analysis, association between higher level of systolic blood pressure and global OH was found, also with the presence of orthostatic intolerance symptoms (although only 25.6% of the patients with OH showed symptoms) and smoking. Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers (different from dihydropyridines) use was associated with OH after 1-minute standing and smoking with OH after 5-minute standing.ConclusionsThe detected prevalence is high and justifies the case finding of OH in elderly hypertensive patients in primary care. The symptoms of orthostatic intolerance are correlated with OH, but only 1 out of 4 patients showed symptoms.     IFCP Riemann solver: Application to tsunami modelling using GPUs

    In this work, we present a simplified two-layer model of Savage-Hutter type to simulate tsunamis generated by landslides (see (Fern´andez et al. 2008)). A layer composed of fluidized granular material is assumed to flow within an upper layer composed of an inviscid fluid (e.g. water). The sediment layer ismodelled by a Savage-Hutter type model where buoyancy effects have been considered. The system is discretized using IFCP finite volume scheme. The first order IFCP scheme was introduced in (Fern´andez et al. 2011) and it is constructed by using a suitable decomposition of a Roe matrix by means of a parabolic viscosity matrix, that captures information of the intermediate fields (Intermediate Field Capturing Parabola).     Paper presented to the 10th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Florida, 14-16 July 2014.The increasing worldwide use of bio-fuels constitutes one of the measures considered to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Bio-fuels also have an important part to play in promoting the security of energy supply, and promoting technological development and innovation. Di-butyl ether (DBE) is used as blending agent in reformulated gasoline and has been included in recent international regulations on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources for transport. The DBE is a non-polluting, high octane number blending agent. DBE could be also used as cetane enhancer in bio-diesel fuel, and can be obtained as an added valued additive to second generation bio-fuels. Second generation bio-fuels could be obtained from ligno-cellulosic biomass and waste materials. Ether + alkane mixtures are of interest as model mixtures for gasoline in which the ether act as renewable, high octane number blending agent. From this point of view the study of the binary mixtures dibutyl ether + heptane, are very interesting. Heptane has been chosen as a representative of the linear alkanes that contain real gasoline. Density of the binary mixtures DBE + heptane and its pure compounds have been measured under pressure and reported in this work using a vibrating tube densitometer. Accurate PVT properties of pure ethers and its mixtures are required to develop and test equations of state, because equations of state are critical to design storage and transport systems in the fuel industry. Moreover, high temperature and pressure data serve to validate equations of state which are reliable for the increasingly use of industrial and engine processes under hard conditions. Experimental densities (826 points) for the compressed liquid phase of the binary systems DBE + heptane have been measured at 298.15, 313.15, 333.15, 353.15, 373.15 and 393.15 K and at pressures up to 140 MPa, with an absolute uncertainty of 0.7 kg·m-3.     Expanded equine cumulus-oocyte complexes exhibit higher meiotic competence and lower glucose consumption than compact cumulus-oocyte complexes

This divergence could be related to different glucose metabolism. To test this hypothesis eCOCs, cCOCs, and expanded or compact mural granulosa cells (EC and CC respectively) were matured in vitro for 30 hours and the maturation rate, glucose metabolism, and expression of genes involved in glucose transport, glycolysis, apoptosis and meiotic competence were determined. Significant differences were found between eCOCs and cCOCs maturation rates (50% vs. 21.7 %; n = 192 and 46 respectively, p < 0.001), glucose consumption (1.8 ± 0.5 vs. 27.9 ± 5.9 nmol/COC; mean ± SEM), pyruvate production (0.1 ± 0.0 vs. 2.4 ± 0.8 nmol/COC; mean ± SEM) and lactate production (4.7 ± 1.3 vs. 64.1 ± 20.6 nmol/COC; mean ± SEM) respectively (p < 0.05). Moreover, similar glucose consumption was observed for EC and CC. Hyaluronan binding protein (TNFAIP6) expression was increased in eCOCs and EC, solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) member 1 (SLC2A1) was increased in eCOCs, while glycolysis-related enzymes and solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) member 3 (SLC2A3) expression did not vary between COCs or mural granulosa cell type.     ObjetivosValorar la precisión del monitor de grasa corporal por impedancia bioeléctrica OMRON BF 300 y validar su medición del porcentaje de grasa corporal (%GC) frente a la ecuación de Siri. Centros de Salud Coronel de Palma y San Fernando, Móstoles.ParticipantesEn la valoración de la precisión del monitor participaron 88 personas y 91 en la validación.Mediciones y resultados principalesLas determinaciones de %GC se realizaron por triplicado, anotándose la media. La precisión se evaluó mediante el coeficiente de correlación intraclase (CCI) y el coeficiente de variación (CV). La validez, mediante el error técnico, el CCI y el método de Bland-Altman. En la ecuación de Siri la densidad corporal se calculó con la ecuación de Durnin-Womersley. Precisión: el CCI fue de 0,999 y el CV de 0,4 ± 0,03. Validación: la diferencia de %GC monitor (26,6 ± 9,1%) – ecuación de Siri (27,8 ± 8,2%) fue de –1,27% (p < 0,01; IC del 95%, –1,97 a –0,57), el error técnico del monitor del 2,2% y el CCI de 0,956 (IC del 95%, 0,9335–0,9710), situándose un 80,2% de las diferencias monitor – ecuación por debajo del 5%, con un intervalo de concordancia por el método de Bland-Altman de +5,45 a –7,99%.ConclusionesEl monitor OMRON BF 300 satisface los criterios de precisión (CCI > 0,95 y CV bajo) y validación (error técnico excelente, CCI > 0,75 y diferencias clínicamente aceptables) y supone una alternativa válida a los pliegues cutáneos en la valoración nutricional del paciente.ObjectivesTo assess the accuracy of the OMRON BF 300 body fat monitor using bioelectric impedance and to validate its measurement of body fat percentage (BF%) against the Siri equation.DesignCross-sectional descriptive study.SettingPrimary care. Validation: the difference between the BF% monitor (26.6 ± 9.1%) and the Siri equation (27.8 ± 8.2%) was –1.27% (p < 0.01; 95% CI –1.97 to –0.57); the technical error of the monitor was 2.2% and of the ICC 0.956 (95% CI, 0.9335–0.9710). Thus, 80.2% of the monitor-equation differences were below 5%, with a concordance interval under the Bland-Altman method of +5.45 to –7.99%.ConclusionsThe OMRON BF 300 monitor satisfies the precision criteria (ICC > 0.95 and low CV) and validation (excellent technical error, ICC > 0.75 and clinically acceptable differences) and is a valid alternative to cutaneous folds as a method of assessing nutrition of the patient

The main objective is to avoid losses due to paper records damages and facilitate an easy access to information. In addition, a future digitalisation of near-continuous data will permit to identify high-frequencies signals like tsunamis or seiches.
